Wet Rooms Tiling & Installation Staffordshire Cheshire & Shropshire by Home Interiors

Wet Room Tiling & Installation Information Page

Wet rooms are a sort after solution for modern day showering, and furthermore can be a much cheaper way of installation.

After all you can avoid the cost of a shower tray and glass enclosure, all you need is a preformed shower base that can be tiled or alternatively ask us to build in suitable falls to a fixed drain.

Once prepared both walls & floor the area of the shower would be tanked using a waterproof membrane to protect the water sensitive backgrounds and ensure water ingression is avoided throughout the installation.

There are two ways to protect in any wet room, firstly as above and secondly by grouting the tiled areas using an epoxy resin grout.

We like to do both as the first method of tanking allows the waterproof membrane to be bonded to either shower tray or bath (if installed) or using the tanking material to bond wall & floor together as one to ensure the room is almost like a poly bag.

The advantage of also grouting the tile joints using an epoxy resin is the material is the most flexible grout on the market allowing for any movement be taken up without cracking or problems later.

Other major benefits

Epoxy resin is the only grout to be fully waterproof or impervious, we all see adhesive buckets and bags stating water and shower proof but these statements are purely marketing tools to sell a bucket or bag product.

If you look closely you will find adhesive & grout products are often in the league of water resistant not waterproof, meaning water will pass through a water resistant product hopefully not damaging the adhesive but will surely damage the background it’s adhered to, this is where using a tanking membrane becomes the number one choice as it will protect the water sensitive backgrounds such as plasterboard, gypsum finishing plaster and timber based boards.

Many outlets of today sell all sorts of cement coated backing boards, yes they are very good products, however not at all necessary when a sheet of plasterboard for around four pound a sheet will cover an area of 1800mm x 900mm and even with the tanking membrane used to protect it will come out much cheaper than expensive backing boards that we class as add on sales when purchasing your tiling materials.

More and more wet rooms are now a necessity for many people who need special care when undertaking personal hygiene, we avoid the word disabled as you do not need to be in such a classification to require that extra help in and out of showers etc.

We install many wet rooms for people from early 50s who either need now or are looking ahead to the difficulties that are sometimes presented later in life.

We also recommend people consider the use of none slip flooring materials in such areas as nice looking shinny tiles can lead to an unnecessary slip or fall no one really needs.
